Storage Tips

There will always be an experienced member of staff at reception to give a helping hand and advice on how to safely store your belongings and make the most of the space available.

Here are a few basic tips that maybe worth considering before you get to your storage room:

Plan Ahead

Visit or contact Extra Room for advice on the space that you will need. You can also use our space estimator as a guide.

You might need some boxes and packaging materials. If you do, we sell a wide range that can be collected from the store or delivered locally free of charge.

Decide whether you will need access to any of your stored items and put those items near the front of your storage room, close to the door.

For example:

  • Seasonal clothes
  • Sports equipment
  • Hoover & cleaning products (might be the first things you will want to hand when you take ownership of your new house)

Remember that whatever goes on the van first, comes off last, so if there is some things you want at the front of your storage room put them at the front of the van if you are planning on making a single trip into storage.

How to use your storage space efficiently

  • Store largest, heaviest items first – these will form a base from which you can work forwards and upwards with lighter, more fragile items
  • Fill hollow items such as wardrobes and chests with boxes – to maximise your storage capacity
  • Store appliances clean and thoroughly dried out with doors wedged ajar for ventilation
  • If possible, store sofas and beds on their ends to maximise the use of the height of the storage room
  • Use blankets to protect surfaces from scratching – we sell removal blankets if you run out of your own
  • Store lighter boxes on the top of stacks. Using good quality boxes that have the same footprint will make stacking easier and more space efficient
  • Store mirrors and pictures upright with suitable protection in between
  • Stack chairs seat to seat

Please note that you cannot store the following:

  • Food or perishable goods
  • Birds, fish, animals or anything else living
  • Combustible or flammable materials or liquids such as gas, paint, petrol, oil or cleaning solvents; compressed gases
  • Firearms, explosives, weapons or ammunition
  • Chemicals, radioactive materials, biological agents
  • Toxic waste, asbestos or other materials of a potentially dangerous nature

If you are storing machinery that contains fuel e.g. a lawnmower, make sure the fuel is drained before it goes into storage.
